PANJIM: At a time when the nation is once again outraged over fresh incidents of rape against women and minor girls in different cities and Goa unfortunately too being a part of it, the police have woken up from their sleep.
It is learnt through sources that Director General of Police Kishan Kumar has sought a detailed report of four rape cases reported in north Goa in just eight days.
The rape of 20-year-old mentally challenged girl in Latambarcem in Bicholim, another at Tivim wherein a 17-year-old was allegedly raped by a bus conductor, then 15-year-old’s gang rape incident in Tivim and 21-year-old girl’s rape in Calangute have baffled the Goa Police. Although the accused men in these cases have been arrested, the security of women has yet again being questioned.
After the brutal gang rape and subsequent death of Delhi student last December, Goa along with other states in the country had put in place various measures to ensure safety of women. In Goa, 24 hour helpline was commissioned and women help desk at all police stations was set up.
