DGP tweets of cyber transaction worries

Raises concerns of cyber hacking as there is hardly any mechanism to curb misuse of bank cards and online transactions

PANJIM: Even as the State government is bracing up to go cashless from January 2017, Goa Police Chief Dr Muktesh Chander expressed concern over cyber security and online banking.
Director General of Police Chander took to twitter expressing his worries about cyber hacking as there is barely any mechanism to curb misuse of bank cards and online transaction. “While we are moving towards cashless society, we must also guard against PoS (point of sale) malware & other cyber frauds involving cards & internet banking,” his post, that received 20 likes and got 15 retweets, said.
In his following post, the DGP asked people and other stakeholders in the cashless circuit to be aware of financial frauds. “We can only wait and watch. Meanwhile all stakeholders must gear up for the cyber security challenges in Digital India. Awareness is (the) key,” he wrote.
Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed towards more digital transactions and Goa government is making efforts to become the first State in the country to achieve this goal, the volume of online transactions has increased manifold.
With the State Cyber Crime Cell already investigating a number of offenses, officials apprehend that a cashless economy could witness increasing attacks on payment gateways.
“Although almost everyone in the State uses mobile phones and computers, there could still be many people who are not educated to use internet for monetary transactions. They could be easy targets for cyber criminals,” a senior official said.
