DHARGAL: Dhargal villagers on Sunday gathered near the Don Khamb junction voiced their concern over safety of commuters and rising number of accidents in the absence of a flyover in the area.
Villagers met and discussed the issue with the newly elected panchayat body and further resolved to call on the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in the presence of Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar and place their demands for a flyover before the officials.
The Don Khamb junction is meeting point for over 5 villages which also divides Dhargal in two parts.
The government had earlier planned for a flyover at this particular point but later cancelled it for reasons best known to authorities, the villagers said.
Meanwhile the villagers said that having a flyover at this junction is the need of the hour as it is the national highway and commuters are unable to cross the road due to continuous movement of traffic. They also complained that it was an accident prone zone where many lives have been lost at this junction.
” There is non-stop movement of traffic here and pedestrians and motorists find it difficult to cross the road in the absence of traffic signals. We request the government, the chief minister and the Pernem MLA to look into this matter seriously and construct a flyover within a year,” a local said.
“Many road mishaps have taken place here. Similarly dairy farmers have a tough time crossing the road with their animals,” one Dhargalkar said.
“Traffic police are deployed at this junction for just for two hours but they have to be posted on round-the-clock duty to ensure smooth movement of vehicles till the flyover is built,” said some villagers and accused the contractor for his failure to construct a service road here.
