PONDA: A librarian of S S Samithi School, Dhavlim, Amith Ranganath Sawanth (31) from Valpoi was arrested under the Children’s Act for seriously assaulting a student from Class VIII by kicking and hitting him. The student got trapped in a bench in the process and received fractures on his hand. The librarian also hit the boy’s head against the wall. The incident took place on Saturday on the school premises.
The mother told the media that when her son returned home he started vomiting and complained of headache and giddiness after which she took him to the Sub District Hospital for treatment.
She said her son initially did not tell her about incident in school but she learnt about it only after some parents starting inquiring about her son.
The accused librarian later visited the student’s house to apologise, however both the mother and son filed a complaint against him at police station on Tuesday.
The parents of the student also met the Headmaster and demanded that action be taken against the librarian.
It is also learnt that the librarian had assaulted two other students on petty issues on the same day and another student the previous day.
A Class VIII student was assaulted on Friday. It is learnt that the school has a rule that students have to keep their footwear outside the library before entering, but when the librarian noticed the boy entering the room wearing his footwear he lost his cool and assaulted the boy with a wooden ruler. His parents later complained about the incident to the Headmaster.
According to the boy he was assaulted for opening the library door. He said, “The door was actually opened by another student, but he (librarian) was in no mood to listen.”
Following these incidents parents demanded that action be taken against the librarian. Congress Youth President Varad Mardolkar demanded that the librarian be suspended immediately.
The Headmaster, Shrikrishna Desai said he has received a complaint and the same has been handed over to the higher authorities. It is learnt that the librarian is working at the school on contract basis from the last year.
PSI Ajit Umarye said that the accused Ajit Sawanth has been arrested and have registered an offence against him under Section 8 of Children Act and Section 323 of IPC.
