PANJIM: Days after Goa Police suspended lady Police Sub Inspector Devyani Naik and Police Constable Chetan Naik for offering a bribe to Deputy Inspector General of Police Vimal Gupta to close a departmental inquiry against her, the State relieved the IPS officer.
In an order issued by Personnel Department, Gupta has been instructed to report to Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi. IGP Jaspal Singh has been given additional charge of DIG till further orders.
The DIG was in the news recently following allegations of bribery that subsequently led to an inquiry. Prima facie it was found that the PSI and the constable tried to bribe the IPS officer to close a departmental enquiry against her.
About three years ago, the lady PSI – then attached with the PCR at Calangute – was suspended in another bribery allegation. She was thereafter reinstated but the inquiry continued, which was conducted by Gupta.
The 1986 batch officer of Union Territory cadre joined Goa Police in October 2015. In 2003, he had moved to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. He was promoted from Superintendent of Police to DIG last year.
