Collector bans road digging in Margao after May 15

MARGAO: It has been decided that there will be no digging of roads in Margao after May 15 till the end of monsoons in a bid to reduce problems faced by the people during the season. This was decided at a meeting convened by South Collector Swapnil Naik yesterday. The Public Works Department, Water Resources Department and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited have been specifically instructed to complete all their digging work before May 15.
JICA that is carrying out some works at Khareband, Old Railway Station and Chowgule college have also been instructed to complete all their works by 15th May.
The Collector has asked the PWD to ensure that the pumping station at the subway near Damodar College functions 24X7 on all days so that there is no incident of water accumulating in the subway causing accidents.
Besides, the Sewerage Department has been asked to check the huge two tanks near the subway that are apparently not used for the last many years. Overall PWD has been asked to co-ordinate with the MMC who has undertaken the task of cleaning the area of wildgrowth.
Work on desilting major nallahs in the town will also be taken up by the PWD. The three main nallahs identified are the one at Old Railway Station, at Old Market and at Khareband. In fact with respect to the one at Khareband, PWD has also been asked to remove the reclaimed area while the MMC has been asked to act against the illegal structures that have sprung up there.
