PANJIM: The State has accused former chief minister Digambar Kamat of lying and attempting to interfere with the ongoing investigation into the Louis Berger bribery case.
“The ex-CM is speaking lies and trying to interfere with the investigation,” public prosecutor S R Rivonkar told the Bombay High Court at Goa on Monday, in his closing arguments challenging special court’s order granting Kamat anticipatory bail.
Rivonkar termed Kamat’s interrogations ‘useless’, claiming that Kamat was under interim protection as he had applied for anticipatory bail before the special court. “All these interrogations were useless because he has been protected by interim relief… We want to know all those involved in the scam… come out with the truth but you (Kamat) are giving evasive replies,” he told the single bench of Justice K L Wadane on Monday.
Crime Branch, the prosecution informed the High Court, is investigating the mode of bribe payment to the former ministers and others connected with the case and the source of income following which these need to be recovered. “He (Kamat) has participated in the conspiracy,” he added.
“The special court’s order was as if we are set to arrest him. We did not even initiate steps to arrest him,” he further said.
