PANJIM: Having served as director in purported ‘suspicious companies’, former chief minister Digambar Kamat’s brother-in-law, Satish Lawande, was grilled by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Thursday.
Sources said that Lawande, along with Kamat’s son Yogiraj, served as director of a mining-related company ‘Ganeshaya Infrastructure Pvt Ltd’ for a short period from 2010-12. Interestingly, Prasanna Ghodge, who is chargesheeted in another case of illegal mining, was the main director of this company. SIT is likely to summon him, along with others including Kamat’s son-in-law Govindraj Dempo and others next week for questioning.
Incidentally, there have been several companies which started and shut down abruptly during the period when Kamat was chief minister from 2007-12. “We are looking into every detail about why the companies opened and closed within a short span of time. There were many such companies during Kamat’s tenure as CM and these had his (Kamat) close relatives as directors,” an officer said.
It is also learnt that Kamat’s wife is a director of a company but her questioning is not expected anytime soon. “She is not required for investigation so far,” said an officer.
Details of Yogiraj and Satish’s questioning have not been disclosed even as the former CM is scheduled to depose before the SIT at 11am on Friday.
SIT on Wednesday claimed that it has unearthed 25 suspicious companies, all of which are being probed.
