PANJIM: Reiterating its stand that the party will contest all 40 Assembly seats in the 2017 polls, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Goa desk in charge Digvijay Singh on Saturday said that “as of now there is no proposal before the party for a grand alliance”.
Addressing media persons, Singh said that the Pradesh Executive Committee will discuss and decide on the grand alliance, if a proposal comes to it.
“The Congress party has made it clear that as of now we are preparing to field candidates in all 40 seats. If there is a proposal, at any point of time, then the Pradesh executive committee will discuss and decide and propose to AICC if any alliance is to be considered or not,” Singh said.
“Unless a proposal comes, I would not like to comment on it. You are talking of a hypothetical situation,” he said when asked whether the party will consider a proposal for a grand alliance.
Singh, who arrived in Goa Saturday morning, chaired the Co-ordination Committee meeting that reviewed the party’s preparation for the 2017 elections. “The block committees have been asked to identify and give their views on suitable candidates,” he said. The block committees have to submit the list of candidates to the district committees by July 31.
The AICC leader said that the chargesheet against the BJP-led government is in the final stages and would be approved and kept in public domain, highlighting the failures of the government. “The workers of frontal organizations have been asked to make door-to-door visits in the next three months. The chargesheet will be circulated in each household,” he stated.
The growing popularity of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the State is also a worry for Congress, and it has decided to reach out to the people enlightening them on the failures of the AAP government in Delhi. “Kejriwal tom-toms about his government’s achievements in Delhi but the fact is, he has not been able to fulfill any of the election promises. He is doing exactly what he was opposing earlier,” Singh claimed.
Speaking on the monsoon session beginning Monday, Singh said, “We will now act as an aggressive opposition both inside and outside the Assembly,” he said.
