MARGAO: They six-day Dindi festivities in the commercial Capital got underway on Sunday, with Art and Culture Minister Dayanand Mandrekar launching the celebrations at the Hari Mandir here this evening.
This year, the Dindi Festival Committee is celebrating the 104th year of the Dindi festival in the city.
In his brief address, Mandrekar said that the government would consider giving Rs 1 crore grant to the Dindi Celebration committee if they produce the required documents, including gazette notification that the celebrations have been carried out for over a century now.
He said the government was also open to declaring the Dindi festival as the State festival. Complimenting the Dindi festival celebration committee for planning a host of programmes, the minister extended warm wishes to the people of Margao for the Dindi festival.
Earlier, Chairman of Dindi Festival celebration Committee Damu Naik made an impassioned plea to the government to consider granting state festival status to the Dindi festival. “Dindi festival is famous throughout Goa. It has completed 104 years of celebration and deserves the status as the state festival,” Damu added.
The main Dindi festival will be held on November 15 in the city. The police in coordination with the Dindi festival committee have made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival.
