Quepem Deputy Collector Shankar Gaonkar inspected the site following a Herald report concerning the crumbling old post office in the main market at Quepem.
“I have prepared a report and have sent it to South Goa Collector for necessary action. I have stated in the report that necessary direction may be given to the postmaster to demolish the dilapidated structure immediately, which is detrimental to human life, as the structure has become very weak and may collapse at any time,” said Gaonkar.
It may be recalled that the residents of Quepem, including QMC Vice Chairperson Camilo Simoes, Councillor Caitany (Catty) Fernandes, Ward Councillor Manuel Colaco and Quepem Citizen Committee Vice President Evangelisto Da Costa, had accused the postal department of failing to maintain the old structure in Quepem market, after the post office was shifted to its new premises.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Postal (SSP) at Mapusa, Archana Gopinath, told Herald that the postal department had removed the wild bushes and had cleaned the entire area around the old post office.
“The competent authority has directed the civil engineering department to take necessary action regarding the structure,” informed Gopinath.
