The Bombay High Court at Goa on Monday prevailed upon Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) to maintain clean a 450 metres nullah flowing through Mapusa market which is currently used to dump fish, meat and other waste.
A Division Bench of Justice P B Majmudar and N A Britto said, MMC has to take responsibility to keep the nullah clean, and find permanent solution to the problem while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Cajetan Raposo about garbage issue in Mapusa.
Appearing on behalf of the MMC, senior counsel Atmaram Nadkarni told the Court that MMC has no funds, but a proposal has been sent to the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) requesting funds for constructing a new market complex.
There are plans to build a new market complex, and nullah will be permanently taken care of having parking lot over the nullah, told Nadkarni.
Covering of nullah with fence will not help, he said as the Court that maintained that MMC will have to look after the up-keep of the nullah until final solution is found.
