MARGAO: With the civic body caught on the wrong foot on plastic waste collection, the Goa State Pollution Control Board will now monitor Margao Municipal Council’s dry waste collection exercise.
Following a meeting with the stakeholders, the GSPCB has asked the Margao civic body to take two municipal wards for the plastic waste collection. The civic body has been further directed to collect the thermocol waste from the wholesale fish market and will review the progress of work later this week.
Taking cognisance of the MMC’s failure to carry out the plastic collection drive in the commercial capital, the GSPCB headed by Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha had a meeting which was attended by the MMC Chief Officer Y B Tawde and Fomento Green CEO Sridhar Kamat. The meeting, aimed at toning up the dry waste collection drive in the city, has asked the civic body to concentrate only in two wards before extending the exercise to the remaining wards.
Sources in the civic body said the sanitary section has procured gunny bags from the market even as garbage workers have been instructed to lift the plastic waste along the roadside everyday.
The MMC is also toying up with the possibility of engaging a group of labourers at Sonsodo waste dumping site to segregate plastic waste from the site. “The GSPCB will monitor the plastic waste collection in the commercial capital. We have already told the civic body to tone up its machinery and start the drive immediately”, GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha said, while disclosing plans to visit the Margao Municipality with a team in a bid to tone up the exercise.
Speaking on the tons of thermocol waste dumped and abandoned at the wholesale fish market, Noronha said the Board has asked the civic body to collect the thermocol waste at one spot so that it is lifted away by the designated agency.
“The civic body should put a stop to burning of thermocol or plastic left behind in the wholesale market. Our agency will come and lift the same”, he said.
