PERNEM: Disaster management centres were built in all the talukas with central government’s cooperation so that no locals face tough situations in times of emergency. However, the usage of these centres has become a topic for research. For instance, the disaster management complex at Mandrem which was built at the cost of crores has turned into a white elephant.
The then MLA of Mandrem constituency Dayanand Sopte with the help of the Central government had initiated the project. The building was handed over to the local panchayat last year. During the inauguration ceremony Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had appealed to people to utilise the building for various programmes until and unless it is required to be used as an emergency room during a crisis.

Although the panchayat has taken over the building since last year, no programmes have taken place here as of yet. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to run a police outpost or fire station office in this building but no decision has been taken yet.
