MARGAO: The Shadow Council of Margao has demanded that the Margao Municipal Council announce the date when scholarships would be disbursed to deserving students who have cleared their SSC examinations failing which the Shadow Council members have threatened to stand with a begging bowl to collect money presuming that the MMC does not have the funds to disburse the scholarships.
Former chairperson of Margao Municipal Council Savio Coutinho pointed out that the winners of the scholarships since the year 2016 have not been given the scholarships as yet and in a memorandum presented to the Chief Officer, he lamented the casual manner in which the council is treating this issue.
The parent of a student who earned the scholarship in 2016 while clarifying that his child does not require the money, asserted that the certificate would be a big boost for the further studies and demanded that the scholarships be disbursed as soon as possible.
The scholarships were constituted in 2009 when it was decided to present the scholarship of Rs 1000 to one student from each of the 20 schools based in Margao and hence entail an expenditure of Rs 20,000 per annum.
Savio rejected the excuse given by the council that two schools have not submitted the details of the student earning the scholarship.
