CANACONA: Vast quantities of unsold vegetables and fruits for the Ganesh Matoli have been discarded at different places in Canacona town, causing unbearable stench and blocking the gutters in the area.
The unsold Matoli items at the makeshift bazaar at KTC bus stand in Chaudi have been left to rot and the stench has made it difficult for commuters entering and exiting the bus stand.
The discarded vegetables and fruits have not been collected by the Canacona Municipal Council’s (CMC) garbage collectors as part of their day-to-day garbage collection since Friday. Some of the unsold items were also seen discarded across the nearby road.
As part of its annual practice, the CMC had erected a makeshift bazaar outside the KTC bus stand at Chaudi to facilitate the sale of various fruits and vegetables for those celebrating Ganesh festival. Even the weekly Saturday bazaar was advanced to Thursday, a day before Ganesh festival.
While the sellers of wild (forest) items vacated their pandals on Friday afternoon, the fruit sellers continued to do brisk business at the especially erected mart outside the KTC bus stand complex at Chaudi even on Tuesday.
While stray cattle have been feasting on the leftovers, a large amount of waste has been strewn all around the KTC bus stand complex. The waste has now entered the nearby drains and has clogged up the gutters.
