MARGAO: Villagers from Nuvem and Cortalim constituencies have demanded that the proposed 250 TDP integrated waste management plant at the Verna Industrial Estate be discussed at the upcoming Goa Assembly session.

The villagers met Waste Management Minister Atanasio Babush Monserrate and the Managing Director (MD) of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Levinson Martins and demanded that the proposed project be scrapped.

“The proposed plant is highly detrimental to the eco-sensitive zone which is a catchment area that feeds 32 springs that flow through our 6 villages which are situated at the base of the plateau, which in turn feed the Ambulor Lake and River Sal and also River Zuari. The SWM plant poses an irreversible impact on the ecology and will contaminate the wells, ponds and water bodies which are a source of water for agriculture, pisciculture and consumption,’ read the memorandum.
