CUNCOLIM: The peaceful village of Bapsora-Velim was tense on Sunday morning after a temporary Tulsi Vrundawan was dismantled in the village.
A local Subhash Tari complained to the Cuncolim police that a temporary Tulsi Vrundawan erected for celebrating Ramnavmi festival was dismantled by unknown person(s).
Police said that due to dismantling of the Tulsi Vrundawan tension erupted between two groups. Following this, a large number of police were deployed to maintain law and order.
Deputy Collector Uday Prabhudessai, South Goa Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas, DYSP Serafin Dias and Cuncolim police inspector also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. Later, the officials held discussions with the both the groups to restore peace.
Cuncolim police said that a local Hindu group had erected a temporary Mandap at Bapsora on a local Catholic Chapel committee property. Chapel Committee had granted them permission to host Ramnavmi Festival programmes for ten days.
According to locals the local chapel committee has traditionally been granting permission to the local Hindus to celebrate Ramnavmi festival on the chapel property.
However, the local Hindu group reportedly failed to dismantle the Mandap and the temporary Tulsi Vrundawan even after the expiry of the ten-day permission. And on Sunday the Mandap and the temporary Tulsi Vrundawan was dismantled by unknown persons leading to speculation that it was done by the Catholic community.
Meanwhile, Cuncolim police have registered an offence under Section 295 and 379 of IPC.
