Displaced GMC kiosk vendors temporarily call off strike

PANJIM: The vendors, who were displaced after the local authorities razed their kiosks outside the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Bambolim in July 2021, called off their chain hunger strike, albeit temporarily, after the government issued an ex-post facto order assuring completing construction of gaddas and compound wall.

The rehabilitation work, as per the order dated January 5 by the PWD informs the contractor that the “time allowed for carrying out the works as entered in the agreement shall be 180 days. The date of commencement and completion of work is with immediate effect.”

The kiosk vendors from outside the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Bambolim had been on a hunger strike since November 2021. Their decision to keep on hold their protest comes on the day they completed 50 days of strike.

Leader of the protestors, Inacio Pereira had pointed out that government failed to meet the deadline and the strike will continue till their rehabilitation demands – assured by the government after demolition drive – are met.
