Disquiet in Goa as Ebola takes the world in its net

We are not winning the battle”. The one short sentence of Joanna Liu, President of Medecins Sans Frontieres, a global NGO fighting Ebola, is the biggest jolt and wake up call for the millions now engaged in that battle against the deadly Ebola virus.

As we read this in Goa, it’s time to realise that Liberia isn’t far from Loutolim or Margao from Panjim
At least 4,000 people have died in West Africa from it. In India, though we have not yet found anybody with Ebola though 200 samples from around the country have been sent for checking and found negative.
Authorities in Goa too say that they are following directions from the Centre in all aspects, screening is being done and they have not found anybody with even the symptoms.
But, there is certain disquiet among people given the coverage throughout the world. The images of the almost alien gear used and the heart rending stories from these countries have obviously given some people nightmares.
It is the lack of information rather than the absence of it that gives the impression that the government is not doing anything. The case in point is the way the government is dealing with the Ebola virus issues.
Though there are no direct flights from the affected countries to Goa, there are flights through Qatar. There is no discernible dissemination of information leading to people wondering whether the government is doing anything or even aware of the issue at all.
The health services are supposed to be looking after the response to the outbreak. They state that they have a quarantine area; they are screening, they have a tie up with a lab, people are being spoken to – at least those from the five countries under the radar like Guinea, Liberia, Seirra Leone, Nigeria and San Miguel.
