MARGAO: Upset with the anti-Tiatr comments, the tiatr fraternity has reiterated that the act of disrupting a show is unacceptable. Tiatrists are of the opinion that
by focusing only on the political song sung by Francis de Tuem, those making anti-Tiatr comments are ignoring the gravity of the wrong precedent set in by disrupting the show at Margao, allegedly by the supporters of Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco.
They fear that others may take a cue by trying to intimidate artistes.
Defending the political song sung by Francis de Tuem, the tiatrists said that the song had high-acceptance among the audience from the fact that it was enjoyed by the majority. Further, political satire also has a large audience, they said.
They also feel that Francis de Tuem has been singled out while many other songs targeting politicians across the state have been ignored.
In the past two political satires were sung by late William de Curtorim, Olga Vaz, Seby de Divar, Tommy Afonso, Conception de Tuem, Marcus Vaz, Xavier Gomes and Lawry.
They said that politicians should be able to handle criticism against them by way of cantaram as they have chosen the public life. The tiatrists also had a word of caution for their fraternity, stating that the tiatrists should not cross the limits in criticizing politicians in their tiatr and songs.
Goans for Goa has also issued a statement expressing solidarity with the tiatr fraternity and condemned the repeated moves made by politicians and the BJP government to intimidate the Tiatr fraternity, from singing political songs, trying to censor it.
