MARGAO: The Citizens For Sonsoddo (CFS) has demanded dissolution of the high powered committee led by chief minister of the state and others. They say the members of HPC are either on too high posts or are from faraway distances and hence have no solidarity or concern over the issue.
“A deep collusion and nexus between the concessionaire Fomento Green, HPC and MMC can be seen because even though several important terms in the agreement have been violated and abused by both parties no action has been initiated by either party till date for non performance of the agreement,” added CFS members.
CFS also endorsed the Goa State Pollution Control Board’s (GSPCB) view and added that the GSPCB which is the duly constituted authority having experts in the field, has clearly recommended to the MMC that the waste from the existing dump can be treated and the land re-used.
“Citizens for Sonsoddo strongly objects to scientific capping and reasons that if the dump is permanently capped, what we will be left with is a manmade hill of garbage that may look nice from the top but it will be unknown what damage is being caused by the leachate and garbage underneath to the ground water, the soil below and in the surrounding areas and to the environment and the prime land will be lost forever. Land is a finite resource that has to be conserved for future generations and we cannot allow irresponsible destruction of land just because it is presently made available,” said CFS members. They observed that from the chronology of events a multi crore loot of public exchequer scam in the making can be seen.
Responding to queries, CFS observed that it is possible the issue will get politicized like it has in the past but stressed that their group is completely apolitical. “We have made sure that Citizens for Sonsodo won’t be used for political gains” added Rashid D’souza.
