Distraught homeless Verna family heaves sigh of relief as govt allots plot of land

MARGAO: The family who was rendered homeless after their alleged illegal house on Verna Comunidade land was demolished by authorities can now heave a sigh of relief as the government has allotted a plot of land to them under the 20-point programme.

“The plot has been allotted to Remediana Castanha under the under the 20-point programme at Nagao,” informed Srinet Kothwale, Additional Collector-I, South Goa.

It may be recalled that a few months ago, an alleged illegal house constructed on Verna Comunidade land was demolished after an order was issued by the court.

There was a hue and cry besides a political slugfest over the issue politicians pointing fingers at each other.

The said demolition of an illegal structure erected on land belonging to the Comunidade of Verna, under Survey No. 48/0, was carried out based on the final order in Case No. 1/37/Verna/2012-2013/455, dated August 21, 2012, passed by the Administrator of the 

Comunidade of the South Zone, Margao.

The case had began when Jose Inacio Barreto, a resident of Verna, filed a complaint in August 2006, alleging that Remediana Castanha, a native of Curtorim village, and her husband Ramu Waddar, a non-Goan native, had constructed an illegal structure on Comunidade land at Old Mardol.

Since then Castanha and her family have been fighting for their rights.

However, now upon the government’s approval, authorities have allotted a plot admeasuring 100 sq meters to Remediana Castanha, under the 20-point programme at for house construction.

Remediana now expressed happiness and thanked all those who helped her in getting the rightful shelter.

She has also informed that upon the directions of the Collector’s office, she will be approaching the concerned panchayat for a construction licence.
