Diwali frenzy: Crowds throng markets for last-minute shopping

MARGAO: the markets in Margao experienced heavy footfall as people rushed for last-minute purchases to celebrate the festival. Both New Market and Gandhi Market saw bustling crowds, with shoppers eager to buy firecrackers, flowers for decorations, and traditional clay diyas.

Vasant Naik, a flower vendor, noted that this rush is a customary occurrence on the eve of Diwali, with customers seeking flowers, akash kandils (sky lanterns), and diyas. Sweets also remained in high demand, aligning with the tradition of gifting and sharing sweet treats during the festival.

The markets were adorned with a variety of festive items, including Narkasur masks and costumes related to the effigy of the demon. Shops were brightly lit, contributing to the celebratory atmosphere associated with Diwali, the festival of lights.

However, the enthusiasm was slightly subdued by the high prices of items like fruits, flowers, and clay diyas, acknowledged by Santosh Raiker, a shopper. Despite the price concerns, the markets witnessed a surge in traffic, leading to traffic jams at various points. Traffic police were actively managing the situation to ensure smooth movement.

Additionally, young participants were seen putting the final touches on giant Narkasur effigies prepared for various competitions, adding to the festive preparations in Margao.
