MARGAO: The Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) Dr Tariq Thomas on Saturday met the Margao municipal staff and Councillors to discuss issues pertaining garbage management and also on reworking revenue generation methods.
Dr Thomas said that all are aware that there are different issues like wet waste, dry waste, Sonsoddo that surround MMC and that a discussion was held on each of these topics to strategise on how to move forward.
“The Council has been very positive to find solutions independently. The Council has given a commitment that it will go forward as we have planned,” he said.
He also informed that the discussion on the wholesale and retail fish markets and a method will be developed for biomethanation. “Everything is ready from where and what funds we have discussed. In the coming weeks the councillors have to take immediate steps all the groundwork as the process for tender is done,” Dr Thomas said.
“As per law, the bulk waste generators are mandated that they have to set up their own facility. There is no other way in it and the High Court has given direction to all the councils to set it up. Now, the Council will have to facilitate. We should not be doing it overnight but we need to support them with some financial outlay for setting up,” Dr Thomas said.
“Big societies in Big shopping complexes is a perfect example of generator and they are the responsibility to setup,” the DMA said.
He also said that once decentralised facilities are ready it would help reduce the load going on to Sonsoddo. “Engagement with bulk waste generators will have to be done immediately and individually by councillors,” Dr Thomas said.
Speaking on the efforts to increase revenue of the municipality, the DMA said, “We are working on geo tag based resurvey. Completely resurvey with Geo coordinates is being worked out which is at initial stages. As an immediate measure we are capturing the location data of POS device that is taken around for the collection of taxes.”
