PANJIM: The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) has issued a notification that partially modified the reservations in Quepem Municipal Council (QMC).

Now, in its latest order issued on March 22, the DMA Director, wards 3, 6, 9, 10 and 11 has been reserved for women. Ward 10 among them has been Scheduled Castes (SC) Women. Ward 9, 12 and 13 have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) where ward 9 is reserved for ST Women candidates. Ward number 6 and 7 would be reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC) where ward 6 is reserved for OBC women candidates.

The Quepem locals had protested in front of the DMA against having over 70 per cent of wards reserved, where SC verdict in a Maharashtra matter had issued direction that reservations cannot cross 50 per cent.

Two persons who had been elected unopposed too took part in the protest. However, State Election Commission declared all such results as null and void. However, the DMA Director Gurudas Pilarnekar had agreed to make the rectification and had pointed out that the SC ruling in the Maharashtra matter had come after the earlier notification had been given.
