Director of Municipal Administration Elvis Gomes on Wednesday visited the Margao Municipal Council to address concerns of the councillors and officials regarding the door-to-door waste collection exercise.
The councillors have been told to compile a list of households and establishments in their wards, besides workers willing to work on the door-to-door waste collection project.
The councillors have been told to submit the list by Monday so as to give an insight to the government on the number of bins required in Margao for the exercise. The government has agreed to make available the bins for the households and commercial establishments as part of the scheme. Tri-cycles required for the segregated waste collection scheme will be provided by the government.
The DMA told the MMC that the civic body should launch a major awareness campaign in Margao on June 5 to coincide with the World Environment Day before the project is implemented from July 1. “Don’t lay too much stress on the hurdles. Instead, we have to take steps to keep going and address the hurdles as and when they come”, Gomes told the city fathers and the officials.
The DMA’s visit assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the visit by the Chief Secretary B Vijayan to the civic body last week, wherein it was agreed upon to start door-to-door waste collection in Margao from July 1.
The DMA later told the media that he had an interaction with the councillors and officials to address the doubts and problems raised in certain quarters vis-à-vis door-to-door waste collection.
“The government is serious in implementing the scheme in Margao from July 1. My visit is part of the efforts to put the infrastructure and other things in place”, the DMA added.
