The DMK has voiced support for AR Rahman, criticising the BJP for targeting minority voices amid the music composer’s recent comments on Bollywood. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said that minorities speaking out face relentless scrutiny, adding, “Your social status doesn’t matter; you will be hounded. This has become the norm under the BJP.”
The controversy followed Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network, where he described the Vicky Kaushal film Chaava, which he scored, as divisive and questioned the use of religious phrases. He also highlighted rising communal tendencies in Bollywood and alleged that merit was overlooked in favour of certain groups.
Rahman later clarified that his remarks were not meant to offend anyone, reaffirming his love for India and his belief that music is his way to honour the country’s culture.
