PANJIM, NOV 25
Protesting against activities promoting Portuguese in Goa, ‘Deshpremi Nagrik Samiti’ (DNS) today resolved to launch agitation to shun the Portuguese Consulate from Goa.
The group comprising Goa Yuva Manch, BJP Students Cell, ABVP and other members observed Thursday as ‘black day’ and held a protest march to condemn the “barbaric rule of the Portuguese” and against glorifying Portuguese rule in Goa.
“On this day, we demand that the Portuguese Consulate in Goa which is involved in several activities to glorify the Portuguese rule should be taken out of Goa with immediate effect,” DNS representative Giriraj Vernekar said.
The members also determined to pressurise the Government to launch a probe into the activities and funding pattern of ‘Fundacao Oriente’. Besides, they asked the Government to change Portuguese names assigned to various roads in Goa to its original name.
The morcha which lasted for one-and-half-hour started from Mahalaxmi temple to Azad Maidan while it also paid respect to freedom fighters.
Vernekar further stated that the State should release the ‘unliberated’ Goan land at Mayem to its dwellers or rightful owners.
“Despite 49 years of Goa Liberation, the Mayem land is still unliberated in the form on ‘evacuee property’ in the hands of the evil ‘custodians’…” he alleged.
The resolutions, the members said, will be submitted to the government after its meeting in the coming days.
DNS, early this week had furnished a letter to the Archbishop of Goa and Daman grieving about the same issue.
“This is to draw your attention to several activities in the recent times, which are aimed at glorifying the cruel Portuguese rule in Goa. You may recall that recently, a Portuguese naval ship ‘Sagres’ was docked in Goa to commemorate completion of 500 years of Portuguese setting foot on our beautiful motherland,” the letter read.
