PANJIM: Elections to the board of directors of the Goa Urban Cooperative Bank (GUCB) will be held on May 7. Veteran Chartered Accountant Vishnoo Naik, who has spearheaded the bank for the last three decades, announced his support to the panel led by Dr Govind Kamat.
Kamat’s panel has fielded candidates for eight seats of directors and have got their candidate elected unopposed in the women’s category.
Speaking to the media, Kamat said that for the first time the board of directors would have a strong professional team with two lawyers, two chartered accountants, bankers, doctor and corporate consultant.
Kamat’s panel consist of Advocate Chandrakant Chodankar, Advocate Shubhlaxmi Pai Raikar, CA Narayan Prabhudesai, CA Ashish Prabhu Verlekar, Sanjeev Desai (corporate consultant), Avdhut Chimulkar (banker) and Rajesh Talaulikar (businessman). The panel is already ahead in the race as Pai Raikar has been elected unopposed in the women category. Eminent personalities in the State have come forward in support of the panel with a view to secure the future of the bank.
GUCB has over one lakh share holders who are eligible to vote in the election. However, in the last elections just 3900 members had voted at the five polling stations that had been set up. This time the elections will held in all talukas and there is hope of a larger voter turnout.
Formed in 1964, GUCB is the oldest cooperative bank in the State. The bank, through its pan Goa presence, has 16 branches with almost 2500 staff contributing to the economic betterment of the state especially by catering to the needs of the small traders, self employed and salaried class.
