Dr Marvin Cota bags prestigious European patent

For the first time in Indian history, a Goan doctor has achieved this feat; He won the patent for his path-breaking invention on the monobolic dental implant

PANJIM: In one of the biggest achievements for a Goan medical practitioner, Dr Marvin Cota has won an European Patent for his invention on monobolic dental implant. An overjoyed doctor, while addressing a press conference on Wednesday, claimed that for the first time in the country’s history, a Goan has achieved this feat.
His design, which passed hrough some of the most stringent tests to obtain the patent, is considered to be the first of its kind in the world, according to Cota.  
He is an alumnus of the Goa Dental College, Bambolim and graduated in the 90s. He later completed his masters and thereafter started his private practice in Vasco followed by a branch-clinic at Tonca, Caranzalem. He then gave up his practice to dedicate in inventing the unique design. 
“I used to feel very bad for patients as they are spending so much of money and then over a period of time, they are likely to lose that implant. This got to me to thinking that they should have optimum function, which led me to designing my own implants,” added Cota.
“It is a proud moment. My design has been granted patent by European Patent Office, which is headquartered at Munich, Germany,” the jubilant doctor stated.  
Cota maintained that India hitherto has dentistry implant patent from US, Korea and Germany; but with this achievement, India has its own patent now. “It has been a lot of struggle as I had to quit my dentistry practice. Now, we have our own patent that other countries can use giving credit to Goa and India. My invention has an advanced technology giving less pain and fast recovery,” he added.  
This invention, he said has the potential to overcome most of shortcomings of current day root form dental implants by distributing the biting forces in a equilibrium.  Its use on patients will involve a simple procedure without any surgical flaps. There will also be no stitches making the procedure almost completely painless.
