PANJIM: In a bid to ensure that there are no irregularities in the election procedure of Goa’s age-old systems ~ comunidades and devasthans ~ the State Law Commission is working on a draft legislation prescribing and regularising the election process.
The Commission in April had sought opinions and suggestions from citizens to enable it to prepare a report on the same.
Chairman of the Law Commission Narendra Sawaikar, while refusing to disclose any details, said that in the changed circumstances a need has cropped up to have a re-look at the provisions of the elections of these two bodies.
He said that government has decided to enact a common legislation streamlining the election procedure of both the bodies which would be more suited to the changed times and circumstances.
Currently, the elections to comunidades are been held as per the Code of Comunidades while the temple (devasthan) elections are held under devasthan regulations.
Elections to Comunidades have been a source of controversy with allegations of irregularities by various sections of the society. The issue had also ruled the recently concluded Assembly session. The State recently constituted the Comunidade Commission to look into the issues of the body.
 and its members.
“I cannot disclose the details of the draft, but all efforts would be made to ensure that the election procedures are regularised,” Sawaikar said.
