Dramapur, Macazana declare full support to Konkani in Roman script

Villagers claim the script deserves its due recognition in the Official Language Act

MARGAO: The movement started by the Global Konknni Forum is gaining support each passing day with Dramapur and Macazana panchayats joining other village bodies in passing resolutions demanding equal status for Konkani in Roman script in the Official Language Act.

Till date, supporters of the Roman script and locals of nearly 50 panchayats across the State have declared their full support to the ongoing movement, seeking justice for the Roman script.

The next move of the Global Konknni Forum (GKF) is to hold corner meetings in each village to create awareness on the issue among the people and Konkani lovers.

On Sunday, Dramapur and Macazana gram sabhas, along with Rachol, Raia, and Davorlim-Dicarpale, also passed resolutions seeking equal status for the Roman script.

Dramapur villagers claimed that tiatr, recognised as Goa’s heritage, uses the Roman script, which deserves its due recognition in the Official Language Act.

The villagers said that the government is obligated to grant all rights, including those in the Official Language Act, to the Roman script alongside the Devanagari script.

Similarly, the Macazana gram sabha also resolved to demand equal status for the Roman script.

According to Jose Salvador Fernandes, secretary of Global Konknni Forum (GKF), nearly 50 panchayats have already passed resolutions demanding equal status for the Roman script.

“Our next action plan is to hold corner meetings in villages,” he added.
