MARGAO: After the Chinchinim-Deussua Village Panchayat and Margao Municipal Council from Salcete Taluka, now Dramapur-Sirlim Village Panchayat has unanimously resolved to object to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) granted by the Central Water Commission (CWC) to Karnataka to divert waters of River Mhadei.
The panchayat has asked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant prevailed upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the same to save Goa and Goans.
It has been informed that panch Melba Joshila Gomes moved the motion at the recently held panchayat meeting and pointed out that Mhadei River was the lifeline of Goan, as it is the source of water for the two major rivers in the State.
She claimed that diverting the waters of Mhadei will severely affect the flow of water in Mandovi River, which will result in the saline water reaching further inward thereby destroying the fine ecology existing on the river banks.
The resolution pointed out that Mhadei River sustains around 1,500 sq kms of land in Goa, besides facilitating fisheries and transportation in the State, which would be hampered if the flow of water is diverted.
