PANJIM: As part of the World Oceans Day, Drishti Lifesaving collaborated with various organisations and organised beach clean-up drives at multiple locations including Miramar, Baga and Colva. Over 100 members from the organisations participated in the beach clean-up activities.
Around 50 young players from FC Goa’s local football grassroots centres and students from Green Meadows School, Saligao participated in the activity aimed at building awareness about the importance of the ocean, beaches and local marine life among young children. During the activity Jill Ferguson, Managing Director, Forca Goa, taught the youngsters how to segregate wet and dry waste.
In a statement issued on Friday, Drishti Lifesaving said it collects an average of 2500kgs of garbage. In a bid to ensure the beaches stay clean, Drishti and Tourism Department rolled out an initiative on garbage collection wherein citizens can point out garbage black spots along the coast via a WhatsApp message. “So far we have received encouraging responses from the people,” Ankit Somani, MD, Drishti Lifesaving said.
With Drishti being a temporary agency to carry out the beach cleaning, the Tourism Minister has directed the department to expedite the tendering process for appointing a new beach cleaning contractor.
