Thirteen students from the Dona Paula-based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) were rescued in a swift and coordinated operation by Drishti Marine lifesavers after the fishing trawler they were travelling in ran aground on a sandbar off Miramar beach.
The incident occurred around 200 metres from the shoreline while the students were on a marine study tour. On noticing the trawler stranded in shallow waters, Drishti Marine lifesavers promptly launched a rescue operation to ensure the safety of all onboard.
All 13 students were safely brought ashore without any injuries. The timely response and professionalism of the lifesavers prevented the situation from escalating, especially given the potential risks posed by changing tides and sea conditions.
Officials said the rescue highlights the importance of continuous coastal surveillance and quick response mechanisms along Goa’s popular beaches, particularly during marine research and tourism activities.
