PORVORIM, APRIL 21
Intensifying its drive against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, the Mapusa Traffic Cell has booked 40 cases within the last 11 days.
“We had booked only 50 cases of drunken driving in 2009. While investigating recent accidents, it was observed that most of them had occurred due to rash and negligent driving by those under the influence of alcohol, said Traffic Inspector Udai Parab.
“Accidents at night along the coastal belt from Siquerim to Baga has become a regular feature and drivers those were found responsible for the accidents were tourists, both foreign and domestic.”
“They are not familiar with roads along the coastal belt and after consuming alcohol, they lose control of their vehicles and causes accidents. Hence, it was decided the traffic department to launch a drive against drunken driving,” PI Parab said.
Four traffic police officers have been deputed along the coastal belt alone during night time to book the offenders. These officers carry with them an alcometer and offenders are arrested and put in the police lock up at Mapusa Police station. They are then produced before the Judicial Magistrate Firs Class next day,” said PI Parab.
