MARGAO: Residents of Seraulim on early Sunday morning caught red handed a goods rickshaw driver for illegally transporting tons of hotel waste into the village.
Agitated residents, who have been fighting a sustained battle against two waste dumps in the village, stopped the rickshaw from heading to the dumps. The residents later intimated the Colva police, who later took the three-wheeler to the police station.
Information revealed that the Colva police registered an offence against the rickshaw driver for illegally transporting the waste into the village.
Incidentally, the GSPCB had recently cracked a whip against starred hotels along the coast for supplying their wet waste to the piggeries and for the failure to operating their waste treatment plants.
In fact, GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha had said that the drive against the starred hotels is being carried out given that wet waste from these hotels has found its way to the piggeries in the villages, creating waste mounds and posing nuisance and health hazard to the villagers.
