CANACONA: Pre-monsoon rain claimed its first casualty along the treacherous Karmalghat section, when a driver from Kolhapur died on the spot and four others were seriously injured in a road mishap on Saturday morning.
According to police sources, the car driver, Janoba Benake (50), died on the spot and four other occupants, Yamji Patil (58), Sunanda Patil (55), Maya Patil (16) and Ellappa Patil (65), all from Kolhapur, were injured when their car (MH-09 MB-5681), which was proceeding towards Canacona, hit an oncoming tipper truck (GA-08 U-0804).
Sources informed that the accident occurred at a turn some metres ahead of the Ganapati Ghumti on the Canacona side of the Karmalghat section. It was reportedly raining heavily when the mishap took place, sources said.
The truck driver, Dayand Velip of Joida-Karnataka, escaped unhurt in the mishap. Police further informed that the body has been sent for an autopsy at Hospicio Hospital, Margao. All the four injured persons were first moved to the Canacona CHC and later referred to the Hospicio at Margao for medical treatment.
Canacona Police is investigating the case.
