MARGAO: A Bombay bound bus was detained at the Old Market circle at Margao as its driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol during the police drive against drunken driving last evening. The bus was detained as it had only one driver.
Police Inspector Navlesh Dessai while detaining the driver explained the situation to the seven passengers who were already in the bus while the other passengers were to be collected en route. “Little wonder there are so many accidents with the Bombay bound buses,” said Navlesh.
In South Goa police had set up a total of 57 check posts to test for drunken driving with the Traffic cell setting up 36 check posts and the police another 21. By 9 am the Margao Town police who were manning the check post at Khareband registered one case while the Fatorda Police manning the Old Market circle check post registered two cases.
The check posts set up by the Traffic Police were as follows: Margao – 10, Ponda – 8, Colva – 3, Vasco – 9, Quepem – 1, Curchorem – 3 and Canacona – 2. While the Goa police check posts were as fololows: Salcete – 7 of which two were in the Margao Municipal Area, Verna – 3, Vasco, Curchorem and Ponda – 2 each and one each at Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem, Collem and Dabolim.
