MAPUSA: SP North Chandan Chaudhary highlighted Goa is a tourist State and the problem of drugs peddling is existing while addressing the media on the sidelines of a drug abuse awareness programme organised by the North Goa District Police at St Xavier’s Higher Secondary, Mapusa, on Monday. The programme aimed at creating awareness on drug abuse and use of music to combat drug abuse among the youth.
“This year in the last six months we have registered already around 50 cases. Along with prosecution it is also necessary that awareness is made a part of dealing with this entire crisis of drug abuse. There is a possibility that a lot of youngsters are taking charm in this due to peer pressure, depression, anxiety or the entire idea of fitting in a friend circle. It is essential that a collaborative effort is initiated. It is police along with doctors and various other social organisations that have been dealing in this area need to come together,” she said.
While the Goa-based musician, Varun Carvalho asked the youth to choose positively and use music over drugs. He highlighted the positive effects of music over the negative effects of drugs. There was also a demonstration on how to get high on music.
“Make music a drug and listen to it when you are depressed. Do not get into drugs as it clouds your brain,” said the founder of Rise Nation Army.
Senior psychiatrist and nodal officer at the drug treatment clinic at Mapusa District Hospital Dr Rajesh Dhume gave a power point presentation on the ill effects of drugs and said that drug addiction is a controllable mental illness which needs to be treated accordingly.
