PANJIM: Fearing a dressing down from his employers for damaging a company vehicle, Niraj Sourat, a Haryana resident who got drunk and met with an accident scripted an elaborate story to say that he was attacked, robbed and his vehicle was set afire. His well scripted tale was torn to shreds by the acting Anjuna PI Paresh Naik who found that Sourat was lying through his teeth. He was severely reprimanded, warned and sent off after giving and apology to the cops for wasting their time.
Police said that Sourat was employed at a construction company in Anjuna and drove the vehicle bearing registration number GA04C 2134 allegedly in drunken stupor, had a tiff with some unknown persons by the roadside, took a U turn and as he was zooming, he lost control over the vehicle which turned over, was badly damaged and caught fire. “Sourat then managed to get out of the vehicle by breaking the windscreen and called up the cops to say he was robbed by four men of Rs 1,50,000 near Khursawado, Assagao on Monday night and his vehicle was torched,” said the PI.
The police initially believed him but on seeing him drunk, they became suspicious and on grilling Sourav they found discrepancies in the narration of the sequence of events and questioned him again.
The PI said that Sourav then allegedly broke down and spilled the beans and told the cops that he had lost control of his vehicle and met with a self accident. Aware that he would be pulled up by the company, he cooked up a story of getting mugged by the roadside only to be hauled up by the Anjuna police for drinking under the influence of alcohol and the creating nuisance.
“Sourav then tendered an unconditional apology to the police,” said PI Naik.
