Dry grass catches fire at Colvale

Quick response from firefighters prevents further damage

COLVALE: A massive fire engulfed the dry grass at Colvale on Tuesday afternoon. Local residents called the Fire and Emergency Department Mapusa twice, after noticing the flames on two occasions. The cause of the fire is not known. It is presumed that some unknown person started the fire, which spread rapidly to the entire area, Mapusa Fire and Emergency Service told O Heraldo.

The Fire and Emergency Service Department team first received a call at 1.20 pm and then again at 3.12 pm. The fires occurred on private property in front and behind the Sai Baba Temple at Colvale. Two tenders were sent to the spot on the two occasions when fire erupted and doused the fire and prevented it from spreading, averting any further damage.

The firemen involved in dousing the fire were Suraj Shetgaonkar and Prashant Shetgaokar, both leading firefighters, Swapnesh Kalangutkar and Yogesh Amonkar driver operators, and firefighters Tukaram Redkar, Hitesh Parab, Siddesh Shet and Yogesh Amonkar.
