Dual citizenship: Centre has no knowledge of Goans with Portuguese passport

NEW DELHI: The Home ministry maintains neither the list of persons who applied for registration of their birth nor the list of people from Goa who have obtained the Portuguese passport after registration, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju disclosed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

The minister was replying to Congress MP Shantaram Naik’s queries in view of two MLAs facing disqualification for acquiring the Portuguese citizenship.
The minister further stated that no Goan has applied to the Centre for any relief from losing the Indian citizenship by acquiring the dual citizenship of Portugal.
He informed Naik, in a written reply, that the Indian constitution does not allow dual citizenship.
“A citizen of India who by naturalization, registration otherwise voluntarily acquired the citizenship of another country shall, upon such acquisition, ceases to be a citizen of India under Section 9(I) of the Citizenship Act, 1955,” he said.
