Dug-up highway causes early morning traffic mess at Margao’s doorstep

MARGAO: There was a major traffic jam outside the South Goa District Collectorate and South Goa District Hospital on Friday morning, due to the ongoing work of the Sewerage Department and the multiple traffic diversions on the busy stretch.

The traffic jam began early in the morning and vehicles were moving at a snail’s pace on the National Highway, which is also the route taken by KTC buses.

It may be recalled that due to the road works underway, some stretches of the road have been closed. Due to this, the road opposite the District Collectorate which was meant for one-way traffic from Margao to Panjim, has become a two-way road for traffic moving in both directions. This is the case on the stretch opposite the Margao KTC bus stand as well.

However, in front of the South Goa District Hospital, a new temporary mud road has been created for traffic moving from Panjim to Margao. The condition of this road is very bad. On the other side, for the traffic moving from Margao to Panjim, the centre of the road has been dug up, leaving only a narrow sliver of road for commuters to ply on.

All of these factors have caused these daily traffic jams. “Today’s traffic was terrible and there were parents who were taking their children to school who got stuck. People going to their offices were stuck. The road work should at least be suspended during peak hours in the interest of the public.

The Collector’s office and PWD should look into these issues at the earliest,” said activist Milagres Fernandes from Margao.
