CALANGUTE: Calangute Panchayat has threatened to file a complaint against the contractor of electricity department for digging the roads and keeping them exposed during the rains.
In a letter to the assistant engineer, office of Sub Divisional Engineer, Calangute, the Calangute panchayat threatened to file a complaint against the contractor for digging the roads and keeping them exposed during the rains, posing a threat to villagers, motorists and others. The assistant engineer has been asked to direct the contractor to fill the dug roads in the jurisdiction of Calangute Panchayat to avoid people falling in them and injuring themselves.
Speaking to Herald, Calangute Panchayat Panch and de facto leader Joseph Sequeira said the people and villagers of Calangute have been complaining of bad roads, particularly at Boa Viagem Chapel area, St Alex Church, Falcon Resort and Calangute police station at Naikka Vaddo, Calangute.
“The roads were dug by the contractor of electricity department to lay underground cables and were supposed to be re-done with PCC, rubble packing, etc, but the roads were left open, posing a threat to lives of motorists and others,” said Sequeira.
“We cannot repair the roads even though it causes inconvenience to the villagers as they are PWD roads. We have, however, done our part by writing to the assistant engineer of electricity department, Calangute, to repair the damaged road immediately,” he added.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said the PWD has been directed to take up repairs of all the potholed roads once the rains subside in the State.
“All the roads in the jurisdiction of Calangute Panchayat will be done by GSIDC and PWD before the commencement of tourist season,” assured Lobo.
