Dumping of mud near River Sal annoys Betul fishermen

MARGAO: Fishermen from Betul are irked with the manner in which the desilting work of River Sal was carried out as the mud left behind has formed a barrier of sorts, thereby making it extremely difficult for them to get their boats in and out of the river.

The fishermen added that when the desilting work had begun, they were informed that the mud would be shifted from the banks of the river and taken elsewhere.

However, it has been dumped at the spot and accumulated in a straight line parallel to the river banks and thereby blocking the natural path the fishermen would take, when they would bring their boats into the river and vice versa.

The fishermen lamented that they were informed that the work of removing the mud cannot be completed due to the ongoing monsoon season but they added that the difficulties they are facing is also affecting their livelihood.

It may be recalled that the fishermen are already facing issues due to the sand bar at the mouth of the River Sal for which they have been demanding for a training wall to be constructed, which is also delayed.
