Dumps are feasting grounds for dogs

CORTALIM: Heaps of garbage lying unattended at a dustbin along the highway at Pazentar in Cortalim has come in for criticism from residents and passers-by.

The garbage which has been left uncollected for over a week has turned into scourge with dogs and cattle feasting at the dump site and garbage even getting on the highway.
Villagers now fear that with the garbage rotting it would be hazardous to them and that the government should tackle the menace before it can turn into an epidemic.
Bonny Coutinho, a businessman from Cortalim, said: “We expected that this new government would tackle garbage. But even after more than two years, no permanent solution has been found to tackle the menace at source.”
What has aggravated the situation is that the strays dogs and cattle could pose a danger to motorists as they are many times crisscross the busy highway to make it to the dump site.
When contacted, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha said the tender for garbage collection has recently expired and the High Level Task Committee had met recently to decide on the tender.
“I am confident that things will be sorted out soon and the situation will come back to normal soon,” she added.
