PERNEM: Despite being banned, illegal bull fights – locally known as dhirio – are often organised in Pernem taluka. Last Sunday, a bull fight was witnessed on a hill at Corgao, which drew hundreds of spectators, mainly youth.
The Pernem police on Wednesday arrested Nakul Keshav Naik, a resident of Naikwada-Mandrem, and Robert Agnel Fernandes from Khajne for organising the bullfight at Corgao.
The duo Pernem police booked the duo under Section 429 read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 11 (m) (ii) (n) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960.
Eyebrows have been raised since the arrests were made only on Wednesday after photos and videos of the Sunday bull fight went viral.
Despite being banned by the court, bull fights have become a common sight even though animal rights activists demand that the police enforce the law in letter and spirit.
The canvassing for a bull fights is done either through Whatsapp messages and word of mouth which draws not only local youths but even people from neighbouring villages of Maharashtra.
