MARGAO: Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar while speaking at the official function held as part of Goa@60 celebrations to mark the 111th Birth Anniversary of father of Goa’s freedom struggle Dr Ram Manohar Lohia which was held at the historic Lohia Maidan assured that the work of beautifying the square will be taken up as soon as possible.

He further said that he would be checking why the file is still not processed and lying with the government. “I am told it is a project estimated to cost around Rs. 4 crore and I see no reason why it should be delayed any further,” he said.

He recalled that it was from the same square where Dr Ram Manohar Lohia gave a call to oust Portuguese from Goa on 18th June 1946 just one year before India got its independence and added that that meeting gave the necessary impetus to Goa’s freedom movement.

“The sacrifices made by these gallant soldiers and their achievement needs to be publicised and told to the younger generation and functions like these help recreate those memories and recall how difficult life was under the foreign regime,” he said.

He complimented Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant for making the birth anniversary celebration of Dr Lohia a State function and assured that it would continue to be observed as one.

Earlier 18th June Kranti Din Samiti used to have a small function in the Freedom Fighters Association office to mark the occasion and the deputy chief minister assured that it would continue to be a state function following the Samiti president Avinash Shirodkar’s request.
